Launching today we have not one, but two podcasts pertaining to Bellingham's history regarding racial suppression, while also answering how and why Victor E. Viking became mascot of Western Washington University. Recall the Podcast invites Western's students and faculty to listen as we explore the Bellingham Racial History Timeline, the impact of Bellingham's violent past, and discuss ways for the city's esteemed Western Washington University to begin redefining Bellingham's legacy, starting with its mascot. “Here at Recall the Past, we believe that in order to make informed decisions about our future, we must be fully aware of our past” said Mac, co-founder of the promising initiative. “We want current WWU students and faculty to be aware of how this symbology affects the ways that we are projecting our values to the rest of the world, and we firmly believe that we have a right to collectively decide how our institution is being represented.” “We are excited to hear community feedback because that’s really what this initiative is about” Gwen said of the series. “We are very passionate about this issue, and we hope that in engaging with the community we can spread awareness and perhaps even spark a social movement that ignites change on a foundational level.”
